LUXURY WATERFRONT VACATION HOMES

Guests ask us about the wildlife that live around the property.  Florida is a colorful place and the water offers plenty of wildlife to enjoy.   But you may not realize that some of the beautiful wildlife can actually be dangerous.  Florida is not a zoo, or Disney World.  These are real animals and they are not trained.

The canals and lakes are a natural habitat for wildlife.  You may occasionally see a large, bright green iguana lizards that sun on the seawall.  Iguana’s are vegetarians and eat fruit and flowers.  They don’t stay long.

You may see small little lizards in or around the pool enclosure. These are totally harmless and are your friend, and help keep the area bug free.  They will change color to disguise themselves, and are not a threat.

Do not feed the wildlife- especially the ducks.  In addition to being dangerous, it is also against local ordinances. Do Not Swim In the Canal or Lake.  It is difficult to get out of the water once you are in, and who knows, the wildlife may think that you would be great for a quick snack.

Do not leave children unattended at the seawall or dock, they may be startled by wildlife and fall into the water.  Use common sense, and enjoy watching the animals.

The water at the Pelican home, and at Island Cove Condo all connect to many canals and are a natural habitat for wildlife. Wildlife in the water can include alligators, snakes, otters, molitor lizarads, and other water based creatures.  You may occasionally see a large, bright green iguana lizards that sun themselves on the seawalls.  Iguana’s are vegetarians and eat fruit and flowers.  They don’t stay long, so if you want a photo, get it- but don’t get too close they can bite. Some snakes are poisonous.

If you are at the Pelican home, on rare occasions you may see one or more otters swimming near the dock in the morning or evening hours at dusk and dark.  As many as 3 otters together have been seen in the area of the lake, the dock or on the grass.  They look like a seal, and are large animals about 4+ feet long.  They may appear to be playing, but please do not approach them as they are wild. They may be eating a fresh fish catch.  You should remain in the house to observe them, and do not go on the patio as the screens are easily broken. And be aware there can be a huge alligator lurking in the culvert at the south side of the dock at Pelican.

Do NOT feed it, and NO SWIMMING in the lake.

Pelicans can find the water behind the properties a great spot for catching fish.  You will also, if you want to give fishing a try. Be sure to see the information on fishing and fishing licenses in another link.
